The Waldorf Astoria is located on the existing Beverly Hilton Hotel property in the heart of Beverly Hills. This was a fast-track project that required earth retention shoring and the excavation for construction of a two level below-grade structure to accommodate subterranean parking for up to 314 vehicles. The project was constructed in two phases, with approx. 56k SF of shoring wall, including a total of 239 soldier piles and 218 tieback anchors. Approximately 80 CY of dirt was excavated and hauled away from the site. Challenges included a dynamic design sequence with phased demolition, shoring, and earthwork operations, to accommodate the Hilton’s temporary need to continue using certain structures slated for demolition and removal. The new basement and building structure walls were designed out to the property line, and construction at this exceptionally busy intersection in Beverly Hills required diligent planning and quality workmanship for a safe and continuous operation.

           Sunset Times, also known as the Pendry West Hollywood, is located in the City of West Hollywood. Nestled at the intersection of W. Sunset Blvd. and N. Olive Drive. This was the original location of the iconic old House of Blues, and now this property as has been added to West Hollywood’s prestigious list of hotels and condominiums. The project consists of two buildings separated by a motor court, a hotel building at the North and a luxury condominium building at the South. The existing ground surface had a descending grade from W Sunset Blvd to Fountain Ave. at approximately 78 ft in elevation change. This presented a very distinctive and challenging aspect of the project that Calex Engineering successfully planned and negotiated strategies to complete the project. Below the motor court, lies an active Hollywood Fault Zone, dividing the Hotel and Condominium buildings into two unique sites. While ground water was encountered at the hotel site, its absence at the Condominium site was attributed to the separation of the two sites by the active Hollywood Fault Zone. The project utilized 213 soldier piles, 688 tiebacks, and 72 corner braces. 77,655 SF of wall was shored, spanning a total perimeter length of 1,582 LF. Excavation depths ranged from 12 ft to 92 ft, with 109,300 CY of soil removed from the site in bottom dump trucks. The deep excavation required the use of up to 8 rows of tiebacks to retain the earth. Calex Engineering executed both mass excavation and shoring activities to complete the project ahead of schedule and within budget.

           The WEHO Edition Hotel located at the heart of West Hollywood is one of West Hollywood’s iconic hotels. Calex is proud to have contributed alongside Pankow Builders in the early construction phases for the earthwork excavation and shoring for the 4-level subterrain parking structure. The narrow connection between the two buildings, spanning roughly 50 feet, posed its share of challenges. Yet, with Calex's seasoned team of expertise, Calex was able to coordinate and move the soil efficiently, ensuring another successful project completion. The project utilized 157 soldier piles, 231 tiebacks, and 3 corner braces. 36,392 SF of wall was shored, spanning a total perimeter length of 1,178 LF. Excavation depths ranged from 9 ft to a maximum 51 ft, necessitating the use of up to 3 rows of tiebacks to retain the earth. Calex Engineering executed both the mass excavation and shoring scopes to again meet the project deadline.

           The LA Coliseum renovation project was a high paced job with a very tight schedule that left no room for delay. The new Alumni Box Seating and several other stadium improvements had to be completed prior to the start of the football season. The project presented many logistical challenges from importing material to cover and protect the field playing surface, to building access ramps and benches up into the stadium seating for the drilling equipment and installation of shoring beams. While all along, preserving and protecting the integrity of existing stadium features, such as historical columns and stairs. The project operated 24/7 and Calex completed the renovations on time to meet the schedule requirements.

    <span>

           The Habitat, also known as 3401 La Cienega, is situated in close proximity to the swiftly expanding Culver City submarket. The project features multi-family residential units, office spaces, luxurious retail and two levels of subterranean parking. The site is bordered by the elevated Metro railroad bridge to the North, a one-story building to the West, La Cienega street to the East, and the renowned See’s candy shops to the South. Both the northern and southern boundaries presented significant challenges. To avoid encroachment on the neighboring property, an internal raker pipe bracing system was used along the entire southern property line, while special beam installation methods were implemented on the Northern side to maintain the necessary clearance from the Metro line for safety. The project involved 219 soldier piles, 213 tiebacks, 83 raker braces and 12 corner braces. A total of 49,949 SF of wall was shored, covering a perimeter length of 1,678 LF. Excavation depths varied from 27 ft to a maximum of 33 ft, requiring up to two rows of tiebacks to retain the earth. The quantity of export soil was over 130,000 cubic yards, with Calex hauling as many as 350 bottom dump truck loads from the site in a single day. Calex Engineering successfully completed both the mass excavation and shoring work, overcoming all challenges and staying ahead of the project schedule.
